New Work World

In the past year, the pandemic caused millions of people to leave their jobs in search of opportunities that grant them a greater sense of purpose. Employees are seeking companies that invest in their well-being, are flexible and align with their values. This global switch among employees has been named “The Great Reshuffle.”

Worldwide, employee happiness has shown a 3.5% decline from October 2020 to October 2021. People have started rethinking how they work, when they work and why they work. Absence of work-life balance, compensation and company culture are the main reasons employees have chosen to leave their jobs. Work-life balance has the greatest influence with 63% of job seekers stating this factor is most important in their job search, beating compensation and benefits.

The Great Reshuffle has put pressure on companies to think about their relationship with the workforce and how to properly position themselves to attract top employees. Your organization needs to be driven by a strong culture that shapes outside brand perception. Investing time to understand how to make your employees feel cared for and content will prove beneficial for business. Happy employees are more likely to vocalize their enjoyment which can aid your future recruiting efforts. Companies should prioritize spending more time training and supporting their managers. Direct managers interreact most with employees and set the tone for the work environment. Increased training on how to address stressors and challenges that negatively impact job happiness will create a better environment for all workers.

With work-life balance being most important to job seekers, it is wise for companies to lean toward emphasizing work flexibility. When presenting your company to potential employees, reservations regarding work-life balance can be counteracted by work flexibility options. LinkedIn has already seen an 83% increase in job postings that mention “flexibility.” Only 13% of people want to work fully in-person, compared to 56% who prefer half remote and half in-person. Flexibility in the workforce is here to stay.
